Roadworthy inspections after modifications

Paperwork answers the compliance pathway. The inspection answers the car in front of the inspector.

Direct answer

A roadworthy, safety certificate or defect inspection can fail a modified vehicle for the same reasons it can fail an unmodified one — worn brakes, damaged tyres, lamp aim, corrosion — and for reasons that only exist because of the modification, such as a tyre that now fouls the guard. A VSB 14 certificate describes a job. It does not retire the in-service standards.

Take the pack

Bring the certificate, plate photographs and invoices. The inspector should be able to see what was signed. If the car no longer matches the certificate, say so. Surprise is how inspections end early.

Getting engineer sign-off, state rules. Check with the inspecting scheme in your state for what they want to see.

Check the rule before you buy the part

If a change affects structure, emissions, lighting, tyres or the vehicle description on the register, stop and read VSB 14 plus your state agency. We can point you at the primary page — we cannot sign the car off.
